This has been a question asked by many individuals for as long as coffee has been known to man. Is coffee healthy? Is coffee good for your health? Is coffee bad for your health? What are the risk associated with high consumption of coffee?
These are all questions, we, as coffee consumers ask ourselves on a daily basis.
The next time you reach for that cup of Joe, here are some helpful tips to consider when choosing your next cup, and what you choose to add to that favorite coffee drink.
Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks around the world, and as we become more health conscious and aware of what we decide to put into our bodies, many questions come to mind when reaching for that next cup of coffee.
IS COFFEE HEALTHY? LET'S FIND OUT!
According to the European Society of Cardiology, “Higher coffee consumption associated with lower risk of early death.”
In an observational study of 20,000+ participants, coffee can provide tremendous health benefits. Let’s explore some of those benefits.
Individuals who consume at least four (4) cups of coffee per day, have a 64% lower risk of early death. While we factor in lifestyle choices, current health conditions, age, weight, and diet, the study indicated that drinking as much as two (2) cups of coffee per day provided a 22% lower risk of early death.
While the observational study has concluded that drinking four (4) cups of coffee per day reduces your risk of early death, we also look at other health related factors.

6 REASONS TO DRINK MORE COFFEE
1. IMPROVED BRAIN FUNCTION
Each cup of coffee whether caffeinated or decaffeinated, still contains amounts of the active ingredient, Caffeine. Caffeine is the most consumed stimulant in the world. Caffeine is also known to block the hormone, Adenosine, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter which helps regulate sleep patterns. Adenosine is what makes us feel tired and sleepy. While it is temporary, caffeine helps improve brain functions, cognition, your mood, reaction time, memory and in some cases, productivity.
I know for a fact, I’m useless without that first cup of City Roast.
2. FAT BURNING AND PERFORMANCE
Again, the active agent in coffee is caffeine. What you’ll find common on most fat-burners on the market is caffeine. Caffeine is primary ingredient in most of the top selling fat-burners on the market, for one reason - it works!
In fact, many of the YouTube fitness enthusiasts recommend drinking a cup of coffee with coconut oil or grass-fed butter 30 minutes prior to your workout.
In a double blind research study, participants drinking just one cup of coffee before a workout found an 11% to 14% increase in performance during a workout, as opposed to those who did not drink coffee.
3. LOWER YOUR RISK FOR TYPE-2 DIABETES
In a study published by the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland. The study indicated that each cup of coffee lowered the risk by as much as 7%, and sequentially an additional 7% with each cup consumed on a daily basis.
Type-2 Diabetes is characterized as a lifestyle-related disease. Type-2 Diabetes has increased enormously over the last few decades, and affects nearly 300 million people.
The consumption of coffee has been known to reduce the risk of this disease.
4. LOWER RISK OF ALZHEIMER'S AND PARKINSON’S
Not only can coffee improve your mood, elicit fat burning processes, but can also have positive effects on the brain, which lead to lower risk of Alzheimers and Parkinsons.
Alzheimer's is considered the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world, and the leading cause of dementia. Coffee drinkers have up to a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer's.
Now, Parkinsons, is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world, which essentially kills off dopamine in the brain. Coffee drinkers see a 63% lower risk of Parkinson's.
5. COFFEE IS GOOD FOR YOUR LIVER
The liver is a fabulous organ and provides hundreds upon hundreds of vital functions on a daily basis to keep our bodies healthy.
The poor diets and chemicals found in our food and drink, can make the job of the liver, a difficult one. The modern diet contains too much fructose, making the liver work 218% harder.
Studies have shown that coffee drinkers who consume at least four (4) cups of coffee each day see an 80% decrease of risk for liver damage. Additionally, those same coffee drinkers see a 40% lower risk of liver cancer.
6. COFFEE IS LOADED WITH NUTRIENTS

That doesn’t seem like much, but as you begin to consume your additional cups of coffee those numbers do add up rather quick.
In addition to these vitamins and minerals, coffee does provide a wide range of antioxidants. In fact, coffee has been known to provide more antioxidant power than most fruits and vegetables combined.
Now that we covered 6 reasons to drink more coffee, I do want to make a few things clear. While the studies, research and data aren’t strong, the studies were observational in nature, and cannot entirely associate the health benefits with coffee, exclusively.
The benefits of coffee are vast, and the magic number in the majority of these studies seem to hover around that 32 ounce mark, four (4) cups of an 8 ounce portion provide you the health benefits needed for a daily punch.
Personally, I like to have 3 of the 24 ounce to-go cups while I make my rounds, attend meetings, and get work done in my co-working spaces or in coffee shops.
I’m also a huge fan of the City Roast, no cream or sugar, just strong and black.
Be aware of what you’re putting into your coffee, as those calories can quickly add up over the course of your four (4) cups. Sugar, creamer, syrups, and so on can have some negative effects on your health.
